About the project
Delivered through the collaborative efforts of the Spirit Partners team – including partner Fitzgerald Constructions, along with locally based partners BridgePro Engineering, Gradco, and Vos Constructions – this project will enable the safe and efficient berthing of two new Spirit of Tasmania vessels upon completion.
Project scope
Roadworks, bulk earthworks, pavements, asphalting and concrete paving
Installing fire, water, communication, stormwater and sewer lines, and electrical lines
Demolishing existing structures and constructing six buildings to support terminal operations
Drilling marine piles with an Australian first use of a down-the-hole hammer piling methodology to this size and scale
Constructing a multilevel loading ramp, fendering dolphin structures (to guide vessels as they berth) and an articulated linkspan including steel framed gantry and bridges (to connect vessels to the shore, allowing vehicles and passengers to board and disembark)
Towing the AMS Perth barge across the Bass Strait
The AMS Perth barge was towed across the Bass Strait from West Melbourne to Devonport, transporting more than $25 million worth of specialist plant and equipment for the Devonport Terminal 3 project.
Among the equipment onboard was a 49-metre-high, 240 tonne piling leader custom-built by Fitzgerald Constructions. This vertical steel structure, complete with dual platforms and an integrated elevator system, is designed to assemble a 42-tonne ‘down-the-hole hammer’ drill string piece by piece. The innovative setup ensures precise marine piling, even in variable ground conditions, laying the foundation for the future home of the Spirit of Tasmania vessels.
