BMD sets new Decarbonisation Ambitions

BMD has set new Decarbonisation Ambitions, focusing on reducing emissions and contributing to a more sustainable future for the infrastructure sector and the broader community. The goal is to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions in Australia by 20% by 2032, relative to 2024 levels.

This will be achieved by procuring renewable energy where possible, transitioning to hybrid and electric vehicles and increasing the use of solar, solar-hybrid and battery energy storage systems to deliver reliable, low-carbon power on our construction sites. These actions support BMD’s Sustainability Commitments and Approach and align with evolving industry expectations and reporting standards.

BMD Chief Executive Officer Scott Power said the ambitions position BMD for long-term growth.

“By integrating decarbonisation innovations across our business, we’re taking action towards a necessary lower-carbon future to unlock new opportunities and deliver lasting community legacy for generations.

“Above all, we understand that decarbonisation is about people. Our Decarbonisation Ambitions reflect our commitment to creating safer, healthier local communities today and contributing to a more resilient global future.”

Across Australia, BMD teams are already putting these ambitions into action through innovative applications of alternative energy technologies. On the Port to Renewable Energy Zone project for EnergyCo and Transport for NSW, BMD partnered with Coates Power and HVAC to replace traditional diesel generators with hybrid power systems combining a 90kWh battery, 45kVA inverter and 40kVA generator.

Over 12 months, the initiative is expected to:

• save an estimated $20,000 in operating costs

• avoid up to 86 tonnes of CO₂ emissions

• reduce noise, fuel handling and associated environmental risks.

The hybrid system delivers reliable, around-the-clock power for site facilities while reducing generator run hours, creating both commercial and environmental benefits for the project.

BMD Group Sustainability Manager Dan Cahill said these practical, operational-level initiatives are driving BMD’s long-term transition.

“Across our projects, we are embedding decarbonisation in ways that deliver meaningful financial, operational and environmental outcomes.

“By collaborating early with clients and supply chain partners, we reduce emissions through better procurement and construction activities, integrating best-practice technologies and solutions into project delivery.”

BMD will continue working closely with clients, industry partners and suppliers to drive measurable decarbonisation results and accelerate the transition to low-carbon infrastructure across Australia.
