About the project
BMD Urban delivered the expansion of the Arcadia Native Fish Hatchery, located south of Shepparton in Victoria. This upgrade increased the facility’s production capacity to meet the region’s growing demand for recreational fish stocking.
The expansion involved the construction of 100 additional production ponds and supporting water supply, drainage, reuse, mechanical and electrical infrastructure.

Outcomes
Delivered civil, mechanical, electrical and water infrastructure within a live operational hatchery while protecting fish production activities.
Revised the proposed three-kilometre haul route to a controlled 300-metre route, reducing plant cycle times, fuel use and construction duration while maintaining safe interaction with hatchery operations.
Substituted DICL fittings with PVC fittings suited to the low-pressure gravity drainage system, improving constructability and reducing cost.
Used a 97% off-grid solar/battery powered site trailer, avoiding approximately 82 tonnes of carbon emissions, reducing 18,000 hours of generator run time and saving more than $30,000 in operating costs.
Retained 100% of construction water onsite within existing hatchery drainage infrastructure, avoiding discharge to the surrounding environment.
