BMD delivered upgrades to a 37-metre-long culvert beneath a local road in Swindon, United Kingdom, for Swindon Borough Council.

Originally constructed in 1985, the reinforced concrete culvert required refurbishment and waterproofing to extend its service life and improve the resilience of the transport route above. Works included road, pedestrian and associated civil upgrades, while protecting the environmentally sensitive watercourse.

The project delivered economic benefits for the surrounding community, with 50% of project expenditure directed to local suppliers and businesses.

Scope

Earthworks and civil works

Hydro demolition and replacement of approximately 1.5 cubic metres of unsound concrete

Joint preparation and application of a spray-applied waterproofing membrane to the culvert deck

Installation of a mammal ledge to support safe wildlife passage through the culvert

Installation of new ducting for a Toucan Crossing

Road pavement reinstatement and kerbing

Tactile paving, footpaths and medians

Landscaping

Outcomes

Protected the environmentally sensitive watercourse through temporary works designed to prevent construction materials from entering the waterway

Constructed dedicated catchment areas to contain wastewater, which was pumped above the culvert for classification and disposal through approved waste management channels

Maintained pedestrian access throughout construction by carefully staging waterproofing and civil works to minimise disruption to the community

Supported the local economy by employing two local workers for the duration of the project and directing 50% of project expenditure to local suppliers and businesses
