BMD as part of the Transcity Joint Venture (comprising Acciona, Ghella and BMD) delivered Brisbane’s iconic Legacy Way tunnel, a 4.6-kilometre twin-lane tunnel to reduce congestion between the Western Freeway and Inner City Bypass.

Scope

Constructed a 4.6-kilometre twin-lane tunnel that connected Brisbane’s western and northern suburbs through a bypass and vital river crossings around the city centre.

Delivered 38 underground cross passages to provide safe pedestrian emergency access.

Installed longitudinal ventilation system, fire protection & safety management systems and free-flow electronic tolling system.

Completed upgrades to the Moggill Road and Western Freeway interchange.

Expanded four hectares of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mount Cootha.

Outcomes

Achieved new global benchmarks for tunnel excavation through implementation of a specially designed two-component grout system and sustainable practices

Maintained world-class production using two 12.4-metre diameter double-shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), resulting in underground works completed five months ahead of schedule

Redesigned overland conveyor system to carry excavated spoil from the tunnel to Mt Cootha quarry, reducing impacts on surrounding community by removing 96,000 truck movements from local roads

Implemented an industry first TBM disassembly methodology through a hydraulic driven, jacking system which enabled arrival and disassembly of TBMs without delays to the project

Delivered a comprehensive community engagement program to mitigate potential risks involving works near residential and commercial properties
