About the project

BMD is delivering the Eastern Freeway Upgrade project between Tram and Springvale Roads for Major Road Projects Victoria as part of an alliance, including CPB Contractors and Arup.

The project will connect the new North East Link tunnels to the M80 Ring Road in Greensborough, reducing travel times for motorists and enhancing public transport service capability in Melbourne’s east.

Project scope

Upgrades to 4.5 kilometres of the Eastern Freeway, including six additional lanes, new traffic management technology and elevated ramps

Connections to intersecting arterial and local roads, and existing shared use paths

Upgraded noise walls

Revitalisation of landscaping, including tree canopy planting in the Koonung Creek Linear Park

Express-through lanes and Collector-Distributor carriageways

Replacement of pedestrian overpass

Project benefits

Widening of the freeway and creation of dedicated express lanes, smart technology and a connection to North East Link that will ease congestion and improve traffic flow on the Eastern Freeway.

Retention of existing award winning architecturally designed pedestrian bridges, maintaining local connections at Koonung and Cabena Street and keeping the freeway open during construction.

Improved cross freeway connectivity with a new pedestrian bridge over freeway into Eram Road to accommodate freeway widening, and at Koonung Creek through the park to Tram Road.

Noise walls designed to meet new noise requirements, through a mix of new and retained walls.

Enhancements to pedestrian and cycling connections with upgrades to underpasses, improved surfaces, additional lighting, landscaping and signage to improve the user experience.
