BMD’s long standing partnership with the Brisbane Lions and Clontarf Foundation came together at The Gabba last Thursday, as the Lions took on the Cats to open the 2026 AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

For several Clontarf students attending from New South Wales, the evening was especially memorable, with many attending their first AFL game.

Wearing co-branded BMD x Lions scarves and BMD caps, the students also took to the field as part of the Guard of Honour, cheering on the Lions as they ran onto the field.

BMD Indigenous Program Manager Dart Johnson said the occasion reflected BMD’s commitment to supporting programs and initiatives that create opportunities for Indigenous youth.

“Our partnerships with the Brisbane Lions and Clontarf Foundation are about creating meaningful experiences that extend well beyond the game.

“Through sport, we’re able to help connect young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men with positive role models, community networks and future pathways that build confidence, belonging and opportunity.

“At BMD, we’re focused on helping students understand the possibilities available to them beyond school. These partnerships play an important role in building life skills, strengthening connections and creating pathways to mentoring and employment opportunities, including within the civil construction industry.”

Clontarf Foundation Mid North Coast Regional Manager Adam McCormack said the experience was significant for the students involved.

“It’s massive to have the support from BMD and the Brisbane Lions to give the boys the opportunity to enjoy live sporting moments such as this. Opportunities like this wouldn’t have been possible without these relationships,” Adam said.

Underpinned by the enduring theme Strengthened by First Nations. Moments. Connections. Stories., Sir Doug Nicholls Round celebrates the contributions of First Nations people to Australian football. The round recognises the stories, moments and connections that continue to shape the game, while reinforcing that football is stronger when First Nations players, families and communities are at its heart.

Adding to the significance of the occasion, Brisbane Bears legend Michael ‘Magic’ McLean was recognised as this year’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round honouree for his contribution to the game and lasting impact as a First Nations leader within the broader community.

Together, BMD, the Brisbane Lions and Clontarf Foundation are creating opportunities that extend beyond the field, helping students build confidence, strengthen connections and explore future pathways through experiences.
