BMD joins AFL Northern Territory as Indigenous Engagement Partner
As AFLNT’s Indigenous Engagement Partner, BMD will support the Women and Girls Leadership Program, including the Make Your Mark pilot in Ngukurr.
Make Your Mark uses the power of AFL to inspire and empower young Indigenous females to share stories, build relationships and support meaningful engagement through structured learning, strong Indigenous mentorship and personal development to enhance employment and training opportunities.
BMD General Manager - Strategy, Tim McMahon, said the partnership builds on a strong and growing presence in the Top End, backed by nearly 30 years of delivering critical infrastructure and a commitment to supporting local communities and Indigenous businesses, sustainable community outcomes and career pathways.
“BMD’s connection to the Territory is about more than the infrastructure we deliver. It is about the relationships we build, the opportunities we help create and the communities we support along the way.
“The game of football brings people together and this partnership is supporting programs that build connection, confidence and pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth, on and off the field across the region.
“In particular, we’re proud to support engagement linked to the Make Your Mark camps, helping young women see what is possible for their future, whether that is in sport, education, construction, engineering or their local community."
BMD's commitment is reflected through initiatives including a strategic partnership with JK Constructions, a First Nations business focused on improving infrastructure in Northern Territory towns and remote Indigenous communities, and its local-first approach on major projects such as the Darwin Ship Lift Facility.
Head of AFL Northern Territory Sam Gibson said the partnership with BMD will directly enhance the reach and impact of the program.
“BMD’s support allows us to invest in opportunities for young women in a meaningful and sustained way, particularly in remote communities like Ngukurr,” they said.
“This program is about creating opportunity, strengthening engagement with schools and supporting young people to see and build their own pathways.”
The camp will include leadership, wellbeing and football development activities, alongside exposure to employment pathways, cultural learning experiences and community organisations.
The partnership reflects BMD’s broader commitment to reconciliation as part of its Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan, local participation and creating sustainable opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through education, employment and growth.
