Empowering First Nations students with driver’s licence program
For many young people, the cost and complexity of obtaining a licence can stand in the way of job opportunities, further education and community participation. This initiative, launched on Thursday 21 August, will provide practical support to help students take that critical step.
BMD Chief Executive Officer Scott Power said the program reflects the company’s commitment to supporting the NT community and creating practical employment pathways.
“We’ve partnered with the Clontarf Foundation to remove one of the key barriers facing young people. A driver’s licence can provide a gateway to employment, further training and greater participation in community life.
“For some students, it may be the first step towards a career in construction. In construction, a licence can also be an essential part of not only getting to work but also moving safely around large projects or stepping into roles with more responsibility.
“For almost 30 years we’ve been part of the Northern Territory, and we’ve seen firsthand how important it is to give young people the right tools to succeed,” Mr Power said.
“On our projects, our supervisors will often pick up workers to make sure they can get to work. That speaks to our culture of looking out for people. This program is about backing that up with a long-term solution, giving young people the chance to drive their own future.”
BMD’s support will fund learner permits, driving lessons and testing fees for four students. The initiative supports the NT Government’s Drive Safe Program and will give participants greater independence, confidence and access to employment opportunities.
Clontarf Foundation Partnership Manager NT/SA/VIC Cameron Ilett said the support from BMD would have a direct and lasting impact.
“A driver’s licence is a game-changer for our young men. It opens up new opportunities for work, study and independence.
“For many of our students, the cost of lessons, testing and licensing is a significant barrier. BMD’s support ensures more young people will take this important step towards their future,” Mr Ilett said.
