New Centenary northbound bridge now open to traffic

The new 270 metre northbound bridge at Jindalee, delivered as part of the Centenary Bridge Upgrade project, is now connected to the existing road network and open to motorists, who travelled across the new northbound lanes for the first time on Sunday.

The opening marks a major milestone for the Centenary Bridge Upgrade, being delivered in joint venture by BMD and Georgiou for Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Alongside the new northbound lanes, this key infrastructure project will deliver three southbound lanes across the river, longer and safer entry and exit ramps and upgraded active transport connections to boost connection, safety and growth in the booming region.

BMD Constructions General Manager QLD & NT Rob Pickard says the new northbound bridge is the result of detailed, technically complex work carried out over two years.

“A critical part of the bridge’s construction was the on site manufacturing of all 30 precast girders with each one cast, cured and post-tensioned using a specialised concrete mix.

“With lengths up to 48 metres long and weights exceeding 200 tonnes, producing the girders on site allowed us to manage the scale of the moulds, reduce transport risks and maintain tighter control over the construction program.

“This approach formed the backbone of the bridge, enabling us to deliver a structurally robust and high-quality asset for the community.

“With the new lanes now open, the team is turning its attention to rehabilitating the existing bridge structure.”

Reconstruction on the southbound bridge will begin in 2026, transforming it into a three-lane southbound road connected to the bridge as part of a multi-staged traffic switch.
