Rio Tinto appoints BMD for Hope Downs 2 tunnel installation package

Hope Downs 2
BMD has been awarded a contract to deliver the tunnel installation package for Rio Tinto’s Hope Downs 2 Project in the Pilbara.

BMD’s scope on the project will include construction of six pre-cast tunnels - two constructed over live rail and four installed in a greenfield environment - enabling the safe passage of rail and light vehicles through the tunnels, and heavy vehicles to travel over the top.

The scope encompasses a wide range of civil engineering works including micro piling ground improvement, heavy duty concrete footings and walls, precast arch lift and installation, bulk earthwork embankments, and electrical and wireless communication monitoring systems providing connectivity.

BMD Constructions General Manager - WA Leon Fogliani, said the appointment further highlighted our expertise in delivering diverse projects in the west.

“This is a project that will further demonstrate BMD’s expertise in safely operating in complex live rail environments, and reinforce our capabilities in the resources sector,” Mr Fogliani said.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for our Western Australian team to work on this technically diverse and exciting project with Rio Tinto that will power futures and create legacies in the Pilbara and beyond.

BMD recently celebrated the milestone of 10 years of operations in Western Australia, a journey marked by innovation, collaboration and a commitment to excellence.

BMD will take a local-first approach to employment and procurement in order to support local communities in the region.
