About the project
Dalrymple Road is an increasingly important link for Townsville’s high growth area in the city’s northern beaches and was susceptible to flooding. During Townsville’s monsoonal wet season, the previous low level crossing at the Bohle River became inundated with flood water, requiring road closures for up to six weeks at a time. BMD Constructions was contracted for the construction of the Bohle River Bridges which has flood proofed this section of road, minimising delays and traffic congestion for the residents and businesses in Townsville’s northern beaches.
Scope
Construction of two multi-lane bridges totalling 11 spans across the Bohle River and Bohle Overflow
Upgrading of the existing major culvert structure adjacent to the Liberty Drive intersection
Importing and placement of 80,000m3 of embankment fill and 35,000m2 of pavements
Construction of extensive concrete retaining walls, extruded median barrier, footpaths and median slabs
Upgrading the existing intersection at the Greater Ascot development including new signalised intersection, street lighting, drainage and extensive landscaping
Outcomes
BMD supported regional development in Townsville with 94% of work invested with local contractors. The project improved the immunity to existing properties and ensured the bridge wouldn’t be inundated in 100 plus year flood event, far exceeding the client’s objective of 50 years.
BMD was proactive in identifying risks and challenges, adapting the program of works to ensure the project remained on track, ultimately delivering the works in a tight 11 month period.
