BMD, in partnership with Tonkin, delivered a design and construct solution for an upgraded Twentyfirst Street Bridge – restoring vital community connectivity and enhancing long-term flood resilience.

This new bridge replaces the original load-limited structure over Bookmark Creek, which was closed to the public after sustaining significant damage during the 2022/2023 River Murray Flooding event.

The design achieved a balanced solution that optimised engineering performance, prioritised user safety and delivered cost efficiencies, while also addressing water flow constraints and improving access for pedestrians and vehicles.

Outcomes

Time and cost efficiencies were achieved by reusing council-supplied bulk fill in place of traditional rock armouring or concrete edging.

The use of precast concrete drainage elements in lieu of in-situ pours further reduced overall project costs and shortened the construction timeline.
