BMD supports Willem Rockett Spirit Award to honour late colleague

A much-loved and respected member of the BMD family for over a decade, Willem was known for his unique sense of humour, his ability to connect with people and his unwavering commitment to community. His impact was felt across Queensland and the Northern Territory, leaving a lasting impression on colleagues, teammates and friends.

Established in partnership with the Darwin Buffaloes Football Club, where Willem proudly played, the award celebrates the values he lived by across courage, teamwork and determination.

The award recognises players who demonstrate these qualities, with weekly recipients throughout the season and a major end-of-season prize. BMD will contribute $2,000 annually for the next 10 years to fund weekly vouchers and the major prize.

BMD CEO Scott Power said Willem was a remarkable member of the BMD business with an enduring connection to community.

"Willem’s energy, humour and generosity touched everyone he met,” Mr Power said.

“While we mourn his loss, this award allows us to celebrate Willem’s life, his values and the incredible impact he had on those around him. His spirit and commitment to his team and community will continue to inspire for years to come.”

Darwin Buffaloes President Brenda Atkinson said the award reflects the values at the heart of the club and ensures Willem’s legacy lives on.

“Willem’s contribution to the Buffaloes went beyond his time on the field,” Ms Atkinson said.

“He embodied the true spirit of our club through his kindness, generosity, constant support of others and commitment to putting people first. The Willem Rockett Spirit Award - Powered by BMD, honours those who live out these values representing our club that Willem championed, both on and off the field.”

This long-term initiative ensures Willem’s legacy lives on, inspiring future generations and strengthening the Darwin Buffaloes and wider community.
