Conversations and connection on Quandamooka Country
BMD’s leadership team recently came together on Quandamooka Country at Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) for a Cultural Leadership Immersion, an experience grounded in listening, learning and connection.
With BMD’s head office located on Quandamooka Country, the immersion provided a meaningful opportunity to deepen understanding of Country and strengthen connection to the communities in which we live and work.
Guided by Traditional Owners, the experience brought culture, history and knowledge to life. The team visited places of deep cultural significance, including Lake Bummiera and Myora Springs and took part in cultural learning sessions and an artefacts showcase at Quandamooka Arts and Culture Centre.
“Experiences like this are about creating space to listen, learn and build genuine understanding. When our leaders connect to Country and hear directly from Traditional Owners, it strengthens how we show up, both as individuals and as an organisation,” said BMD Indigenous Program Manager Dart Johnson.
Through these shared experiences, BMD’s leaders deepened their understanding of First Nations cultures and perspectives, an important step in continuing to build a culturally informed and inclusive organisation.
The immersion forms part of BMD’s Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), which commits the business to meaningful, ongoing action. By learning directly from First Nations voices, BMD is strengthening cultural capability across the organisation and embedding reconciliation more deeply into how it operates.
Guided by a purpose of powering futures and creating legacies, BMD is also supporting employment pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through partnerships with organisations including the Clontarf Foundation and Stars Foundation. Additionally, the business is contributing to the growth of Indigenous-owned businesses by creating opportunities through its projects and supply chain.
