About the project

Following the successful delivery of Stage 1 in 2020, BMD is continuing work on the Haughton Pipeline Duplication Project, undertaking Stage 2 for repeat client Townsville City Council to strengthen the region’s water security. Located approximately 100 kilometres south of Townsville, Stage 2 involves the installation of 28 kilometres of DN1800 raw water and associated pipework infrastructure between the Haughton and Burdekin Rivers.

Scope of work

28 kilometres of DN1800 pipe laid and backfilled across the site

Installation of specialised concrete-encased sections for added protection in key areas

Construction and installation of four major isolation valve pits for flow control

Construction of 11 thrust block structures ranging from seven to 25 metres deep

Construction of above-ground MSCL and DICL pipework and fittings

Access roads with integrated drainage structures and landscaping works

Outcomes

Despite two major monsoon seasons and over two metres of rainfall across the site, the project remains on track for timely completion.

85% of the total project value has been spent on local businesses and industry including 10% on First Nations businesses.

Powered by a hybrid solar and battery setup, the project site office has lowered its carbon footprint by 54 tonnes throughout the project’s duration.
