BMD engages with Indigenous communities in the Top End
As part of our commitment to reconciliation and diversity, BMD recently took part in two community initiatives at local educational facilities.
Located 148 kilometres south-east of Katherine, the Indigenous community Jilkminggan is home to 280 people who speak local languages including Mangarrayi, Kriol, Roper River Creole as well as English.
In early March, BMD employees visited the Jilkminggan school to build a new sandpit for the kindergarten students. The sandpit was constructed while the kids were in class and enjoyed for the first time over a morning tea of fruit supplied by BMD.
BMD also recently partnered with a holistic mentoring support program, the Stars Foundation, to conduct a STEM workshop at Katherine High School. BMD employees facilitated an interactive lesson that involved constructing a bridge using provided materials and elements from the land.
Following the workshop, Veronica Fejo, a local Aboriginal mentor spoke to the girls about the importance of education. Potential engineering and construction career pathways were also discussed with the Stars Foundation participants over afternoon tea.
As a local construction and urban development contractor, BMD has delivered a multi-disciplined construction service across the Northern Territory for more than 20 years. Currently, BMD is delivering works as part of the RAAF Base Tindal Redevelopment Stage 6 project.
