Meet Hussein Ismail, Operations Manager Water - Southern Region

Q: It's National Water Week and we are shining a spotlight on BMD's growth in the water sector. What do you enjoy about working in the water sector and the role you have in being part of the solution?

A: My passion lies in working within the water sector because it has a profound impact on people's lives. In many parts of the world, there are still communities struggling for access to clean water, and they suffer from diseases caused by contaminated sewage. Contributing to critical water infrastructure projects allows me to believe that I am making a meaningful difference in people's lives.

Q: What are some key water infrastructure projects you've been involved in, and how have they contributed to the bigger picture of water resource management?

A: I've had the privilege of participating in numerous significant water projects, but the Wentworth to Broken Hill water pipeline stands out as an iconic one. Additionally, I've been fortunate to work with BMD on Sydney Water's West Camden Water Recycling Plant, which marks our first major project with them. I've also been involved in the Western Treatment Plant project with Melbourne Water, which incorporates an industry-first biological process with worldwide-first technology. These projects have made substantial contributions to improving water and wastewater quality within our industry. They play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of our environmental waterways, benefiting both aquatic life and our communities.

Q: How do you see your role in creating a positive impact in the water sector to ensure the infrastructure is resilient, fit for purpose, and considers challenges going forward?

A: I view my role as integral to enhancing water security and addressing flood mitigation projects. I aim to assure environmentally friendly discharges that support aquatic life by implementing proven water and wastewater technologies. Through these efforts, I strive to leave lasting legacies in our projects, benefiting both our industry and the communities in which we operate.
