BMD is shaping the future home of the Spirit of Tasmania, fast-tracking the delivery of Devonport Terminal 3 to ensure it’s ready ahead of the 2026 peak tourism season.

Delivered for client TT-Line through the collaborative Spirit Partners team – including Fitzgerald Constructions and locally based partners BridgePro Engineering, Gradco, and Vos Constructions – the Devonport Terminal 3 project will enable the safe and efficient berthing of two new Spirit of Tasmania vessels. In collaboration with TT-Line, delivery partners and local businesses, BMD is applying national expertise in complex maritime infrastructure to deliver this critical project with certainty.

Using an innovative methodology, the project is making significant progress on marine works, marked by the successful installation of the first ten of 27 piles. At the heart of this achievement is a large-scale ‘down-the-hole hammer’ piling setup, featuring a 1.6-metre diameter hammer – described as the vertical equivalent of a tunnel boring machine.

BMD Constructions General Manager VIC/SA/TAS Ivan Fratric reinforced BMD’s commitment to accelerating the project’s delivery through a collaborative, locally focused approach.

“We bring valuable experience to this project, having delivered the Spirit of Tasmania berth at Corio Quay for GeelongPort in 2022. Our revised construction program has been carefully designed to deliver ahead of schedule while managing the complexity, sequencing, and resource demands of what will be Tasmania’s largest wharf facility in nearly 30 years. The lessons learned from Corio Quay, delivered under similarly tight timeframes, are directly informing our approach,” Fratric said.

“We understand the significance of this facility to Tasmania’s tourism and trade sectors, and we’ve prioritised creating opportunities for Tasmanians to be directly involved. Our consortium includes three family-owned Tasmanian subcontractors, ensuring that local knowledge and capability are embedded in the project’s success,” he said.

Driven by BMD’s proven relationship-based contracting model, the project is delivering lasting value for Tasmania through infrastructure that supports local jobs, strengthens tourism and drives sustainable economic growth.
